The Apple MacIntosh

I am of two minds on the Apple MacIntosh computer. I respect it as something done superlatively well and I feel it is something that should not have been done at all.

It is done well. Its interfaces are clearly defined and well thought out. Not only is its user interface a gem, but it appears to have an excellent record interacting with other computers. People who have MacIntosh computers justifiably lavish them with praise.

The MacIntosh is an ideal: the computer for people who hate computers.

But is that such a good thing? Maybe people who hate computers, rather than use a less objectionable computer, should not use computers at all. A computer for people who hate computers is like art for the blind or music for the deaf. Even if it is well done, our effort should be spent elsewhere.
