"It is never right to justify the mass elimination or termination of people under the guise of saying they're unwanted. That's how we get Auschwitz. That's how we get the greatest horrors of the Twentieth Century. Those people are unwanted."

     "So you're comparing abortion to the Holocaust?

     "Absolutely I am. In fact, it's worse. It's worse."

     "It's really not."

     "It's 45 million babies. It's nearly eight times worse than the Holocaust."

     First, I'll point out I'm a fan of Charlie Kirk and, even with this terrible mistake, I'm still a fan. But it is a terrible mistake.

     First, obviously, abortion is a religious-Christian issue, like, for example, requiring every public-school student to be Christian. We are a secular nation based on Judeo-Christian values. The Jewish position is that humanity begins at first breath. Just in case you were wondering what the Christian position is, any Christian who believes in the Bible should believe Genesis 2:7 that says Adam became a human man with the breath of God, same as the Jewish position. Still, there are a lot of Christians who are pro-life in the face of the Bible taking the opposite view, at least the Bible part they believe was written by God.

     In every other sound bite I saw and heard on Facebook, Charlie Kirk clearly kept his religion separate from politics. He expressed and emphasized his religious conviction, clearly backed up any claims he made of expertise, and clearly respected those who see the world differently. (It seems even Charlie Kirk can't seem to keep his religion and politics separate when the abortion issue is involved, a too-common mistake made by conservatives on social media.)

     Second, a lot of people take the Holocaust seriously. Comparing the termination of pre-human pre-babies to shoveling screaming victims into gas ovens isn't going to sit well with a lot of people, including me.

     Third, Auschwitz and the Holocaust are part of something much larger. It is the most-terrible moment in three millennia of anti-Jewish hate. The people killed there weren't "unwanted" as in unwanted pregnancy, they were the victims of vindictive, targeted hate. These two are not the same thing. In fact, they're not even in the same ballpark.

     Fourth, Auschwitz and the Holocaust are part of something much larger. Many treat Hitler's Six Million as an isolated terrible moment in human history. I consider myself smarter than that to recognize the forces that made people do these terrible things are in all of us. The blue-eye-brown-eye experiment done by teacher June Elliot in 1968 as a lesson in discrimination and racism turned into a much-more-profound lesson in how quickly and totally nice, friendly, sweet people could turn really nasty given the opportunity. I believe each of us is a week of peer pressure, two days of missed meals, or a few hours of physical torture away from doing terrible things. According to "Death by Government" the number of genocide (or "democide") victims of their own socialist governments in the past century is 262 million and our Jewish Holocaust is 2½% of that total.

     For a lot of reasons I can think of, and probably a lot more reasons I can't think of, this is not where a discussion of handling unwanted pregnancy should ever go.

     After all this I'm not going to let one bad moment, even a moment as terrible as this, taint all the good Charlie Kirk has done.
